What is your favorite size for ornaments?

It's time for me to pick your brains again....as I am putting together a new collection of small designs...perfect for ornaments and such. I would love to hear your opinions as to your favorite size for ornaments. I know a lot of you hang them on small trees and things. I have done smalls before....so I was thinking of maybe a design area of 4" x 4"" and then an optional border to make it 5"x5". That way you could make the adjustments if you want to stitch them quickly without the border. Maybe I will mix the sizes...not sure yet. I have asked a few friends already.....and would LOVE to get your opinions. So let the comments begin!

Always grateful,
Nancy

P.S. I love all the comments that are coming in already....Looks like I will start with very small designs (3x3) and 4x4 with the optional borders.

  1. Hi Nancy, maybe 5x5 on 14/28 count. That gives us the option of doing it on smaller count to make them smaller.

  3. I like both your ideas - 5x5 with an optional border, but no bigger! Sometimes we want to adapt the pattern for a scissors fob, etc., so smaller is better.

  4. I like 4x4 as well. I also like to use these little designs for friendship pillows, pincushions etc. With a little fabric finishing around it it'll be (almost) 5x5.

  5. I prefer ornaments to be smaller... no larger than 3x3. I hang my ornaments on table top feather trees... the larger ornaments are just too big and I get tired of having to stitch them over one to make them smaller.

How about a variety of sizes to please a larger number of tastes.

  6. I like my ornaments smaller, so no larger then 4 x 4 for me~

  7. To me a stitched ornament is something small, 4x4 maximum and preferably smaller.
For pillows and cushions then 5x5 would be fine.
I scrapbook my smalls mostly so size doesn't matter so much!

  8. For ornaments 4x4 or smaller for me. I must say - I do love the optional border idea. 5x5 would be pillow or mini sampler with the border option. Good luck!

I'm so excited to hear about this newest collection.
I think a mixture of 3x3, 4x4, and 5x5 sizes with optional borders for enlarging the size would be ideal.
I'm sure I speak for all of your followers when I thank you for feeding our passion.

  12. I like a mixture, for the tree I like small around 3 x 3 but I like bigger for other decorations.

  14. Hi, Nancy,
I personally think that 5x5 is a great size for a cupboard tuck, or to hang on a cupboard, but a little too big for a Christmas Tree. For a tree ornament, I think 3 1/2 square is perfect, or even 3 inches. Your idea of an optional border is great, you could either stitch an ornament or larger for a cupboard door hanger.
Look forward to see what you do......

  15. I think a mixture of sizes would be great but my own preference would be for 3"-4" if it's for a tree.

  17. I agree with Merry Wind Farm - 5x5 is too big for a tree ornament. 3x3 or a little bigger would hang really well.

  20. I don't like picking favorites, so a mixture of sizes, 3-4-5, works for me!

  21. I like 4x4 on 28ct fabric also. A 5x5 would give us the option of doing them on a smaller count. So Looking forward to seeing what you design up!

  22. Around 4 x 4 works for me or a larger one with the option to make it smaller by stitching in 16 count etc...looking forward to seen the new designs!

  23. I like small ornaments around 3 x 3, but if he design was bigger you could do it on smaller count to make them fit your ree or basket, whatever way you display your ornaments.

I love your idea about an optional border!

  25. Hey Nancy,
    5X5 is large, I like 3x3 or 4x4.
I can't wait to see what you come up with :)

  26. Hi Nancy ~
Personally, I like 4x4 and smaller. I just finished a 3" round ornament (a first for me) and I like the size of it. Anything over 4x4, I make a door hanger with it. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

  27. Nancy, for me one of the most charming aspects of a stitched ornament is its tiny size. They also seem to hang more gracefully when they are small. 3x3 would be ideal, with 4x4 at the very max.

  28. I think 3x3 is a good size for an ornament. The 4x4 size would work if stitched on a higher count fabric. I've always been able to adapt to the size I want using different fabrics.

  29. I love really small ornaments so I stitch a lot of mine over one to get them under 3 X 3 inches. I just made one that was 5 X 5 and it seems huge--may end up hanging it on a wall rather than on my tree :)

  30. Hi Nancy,

    I prefer ornaments with 3x3 or 4x4 .
Watching them in a bunch is such too nice. If they are samller you can have more of them.

    Love

  31. I like the 3 x 3 size with 4 x 4 with an optional border. It's a better size for smaller trees, plus it's quicker to stitch up if it smaller!

  32. I like a size around either 3 x 3 or 4 x 4. x

  33. I'm also one for the smaller ornaments. I prefer something that is 3 x 3.

  34. Hmmmm...guess I'm your wayward one here....I prefer them a bit larger as I do not usually use them as actually ornaments, but as bowl fillers or pinkeeps, etc. So, I'm more about the 5x5 or larger....I think the optional border, tho, is a great idea. Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin

  35. I would say I stitch designs from about 3" sq up to 5"sq for christmas ornaments. the smaller ones are great for the tree and the larger ones are perfect for sitting on shelves or hanging on doors etc.

  36. 3 x 3 is about right. They hang better in the tree branches.
