I would love your opinion about trims

As I was warming the dye pot the other day I started thinking about dyeing more trims. I have sold a lot of 1/2" regular ric rac and the 1/2" cluny ric rac. And each time I do a 1" cluny lace it sells out very fast. I simply love the crocheted look of this lace and it adds so much to a finished item. I used to do a lot of smalls years ago but then I simply got too busy to stitch and I started on the samplers and I was hooked. My walls are filled. I keep saying I am going to get a larger house just so I can add more samplers!

So I have a couple questions about this 1" cotton cluny lace. It looks so old fashioned when dyed in soft colors (which I love) and can be bright and bold and new looking when the colors are changed. This base is white so I will do a patriotic pack with red, white and blue. That's a given. Then I want to do so softer colors and even the primitive set. Probable cinnamon, rust, a dark plum, a faded blue, antique caramel......I still have to decide how many colors I am going to do. What colors do you like best for finishing? Basic colors to keep in stock. And MOST OF ALL I wanted to ask if you think 1 yard of each color is enough? On a wider trim like that I usually put one yard because the package can get pretty bulky but I can do two yards of each color. I was going to do three trims per package instead of singles. I have to decide if the three pack will be the same trim in three different colors or three styles of the same color. Talk to me......

I am thinking of adding a 3/8" lace as I have sold it before in neutral shades  and it might be perfect for very small items.

I will do two styles in the wider cluny lace. It is actually 1-1/8" and I have been told it is preshrunk which is nice. Then when it hits the hot water in the dye bath it will not shrink. My order should be delivered later this week and after I have some dyed I will show them to you.

You know how much I value your opinions and I love to hear from you. If you would take the time to leave a comment I would appreciate your opinion.   I know a lot of you do your own finishing. And this lace is so easy to tack down with tiny stitches. Speaking of easy to sew....I have a great vintage gold metallic ric rac I will show you next. It looks terrific, is tarnish proof, and I know a lot of you do primitive Christmas items and this would be a great trim to have. I was lucky enough to buy some rolls from a guy going out of business and he had these in the stock room for many years. I just may have to stitch a couple smalls just to use some of this.

Thanks for stopping by.......

  1. Nancy, I would go for the pack of three different trims in the same color in more primitive colors. I usually have a color in mind and this would give options for width/style of trim. Not that I wouldn't use brighter colors if the piece calls out for them! I'm sure whatever you decide will be well received.

  2. Lovely trims! I enjoy all the colors: soft, bright, primitive and neutral. I am an erratic stitcher... no set 'type' of design... I am drawn to many!! Thanks for all you do! Hugs!

  3. Hi Nancy, I mainly use your trims for Christmas ornament finishing and would love to see traditional Christmas reds and greens. The 1/2" or 1" would be great. Also, 2 yards would be great as sometimes I could use more. I would also like the basic white if possible. I love your patriotic idea too. Just my humble opinion.

    1. Thank you. I will have to see what fits on the cards...which I will design this week. As for a 1/2" trim......I guess I will look for another trim to go with the set. I was thinking 3 trims on a card but I could do a selection of cards. Who needs sleep?? lol

Lots to dye, iron....oh joy lucky me! and then cut to length and package. Looking forward to the new colors.

  6. I am not surprised that your antique champagne is a popular color. It is gorgeous. I like your patriotic red, white, and blue. I like neutrals, but I wouldn't be opposed to rich colors (i.e., blue, red, green, purple, gingerbread, gold) or some to go with your floss colors. Like the Cluny lace you featured.

    1. Thanks Robin. SO much to think about. I was thinking of a Gingerbread trims pack too. I used to sell that as a large trim bag and those colors sold real well.

  11. Hi nancy,

I stitch mostly samplers and only use trims now a days for ornament finishing. I used to stitch a lot of needle rolls that used trims, but they were usually in a kit and included. It sounds like a variety of your trims are pretty popular!

    1. Yes they lend themselves for so many applications on many different kinds of needlework. I wish I had time to do more finishing as I really like it.

  13. Love the colors you mentioned. Maybe some in the primitive brown, faded blue sounds good. The color I find hard to find is the reds, not bright maybe muted, light burgundy etc. I started using trims not long ago.

  14. I like to have the neutral colors and would love to see packs of different trims in the same colors. I can see where 2 yards would be more useful than one in many projects I do. I like the muted colors you suggested, but thinking maybe a sage green would also be nice.

    1. Definitely sage green. It is on the list and I guess I need to go with 2 yards of each trim. I will have to work on the card to wind it on so it is not too bulky.

  15. Hi Nancy, I would love to see a 3-pack of different sizes in the same color! It would be so nice to have the options to choose from without having to run out and find something different, especially if you're under a time limit. And definitely 2 yards! If someone is doing a series of charts, it would be great to have the larger amount on hand because I often do a lot of finishing at once and hate to scramble around looking for the right thing/amount. As for color selections, definitely Christmas, patriotic, neutrals and maybe an Autumn set would be wonderful :-)

  16. All sounds good. I have sold many Autumn sets in cluny lace. I believe it had a darkened red, gold, sage and caramel brown in the past.

  17. I don't really stitch with just one color scheme, so I think I would use any of the colors for finishing. As to the size for the 3-pack, I like the idea of a variety of sizes! And I love the idea of 2 yards instead of one! That way if someone had several ornaments in a series, for example, they might be able to match better. Whatever you choose to do, I am sure it will be as lovely as everything else you do, which is saying a lot! :)

  20. I think 2 yard pieces would be great--one yard does't go too far! I would like to see some primitive greens--I like to use rick rack for stems in my applique.

  21. Oh I feel awful here, I am not a fan of trims. I had hooked a reproduction sampler once and it had a lot of lace going across the sampler. I ended up hating it. I don't know why, but I just do not like trims. Sorry.....

  22. Since I buy all this for crazy quilting, OF COURSE I love trims! I use white and neutrals a lot, and there was a time when I hand painted and dyed trims to go with the CQ, but I haven't done that in a long time, though I still have my OZEDYES in many colors. I think I would like either 3 different trims same color or one trim, three different colors. For me, 1 yard is always enough, but for someone finishing a stitchery with lace all around, 2 yards might be better. Does it have to be one or the other? Definitely a primitive set, to match some of the stitcheries on your blog sidebar, I would think. I like the idea of paler colors, maybe not as light as pastel, but heading in that direction. The RWB, definitely, Christmas and Halloween/autumn, spring? Maybe see what does well.
